Police Headlines Affect Your Department: Waze App Causes Concerns in Public Safety

Multiple public safety organizations have voiced concerns over the smartphone app Waze and its ability to share locations of police cars & officers.  Waze, which was recently purchased by Google in 2013, is a community-based traffic and navigation app where drivers share traffic and road information with each other via the app.  A police tracking feature in the app is causing public safety concerns as criminals can use the app to track police presence and patterns.

The National Sheriff’s Association is pursuing the potential disabling of the police tracking feature in an effort to protect the safety of officers. (See NSA article here:  http://www.sheriffs.org/content/waze-concerns-sheriffs)

The Southeastern Massachusetts Police Chiefs Association will continue to provide updates on this important matter.
